Transgenderism and the War on Women

Held: 14 March 2018

Venue: House Of Commons Committee Room 10

Beware The Ides of March

Lesbian feminist academics Sheila Jeffreys and Julia Long will join trade unionist campaigner, Anne Ruzylo, at the event Transgenderism and the War on Women on Wednesday 14th March 2018.

The talks will focus on the origins and nature of ‘transgenderism’ and its implications and consequences for women, lesbians in particular. Speakers will look at how concerns raised by women are being shut down through threats, harassment and accusations of ‘transphobia’, and will explore the consequences for women if men are legally recognised as female. What is the impact on women’s spaces, language and the possibility of a women’s movement? What does it mean for the future of all women? Particular consideration will be given to the impact of transgenderism on young lesbians.

Sheila Jeffreys has been involved with the Women’s Liberation movement in the UK since 1973. She taught at the University of Melbourne from 1991 until her retirement back in the UK in 2015. She is the author of 10 books on the history and politics of sexuality including Gender Hurts, a Feminist Analysis of the Politics of Transgenderism.

Dr Julia Long currently works with women who have experienced male violence, having previously worked in teaching, local government and academia.

Ex prison officer Anne Ruzylo, who recently resigned as Women’s Officer of Bexhill and Battle Labour Party, has many years experience as a trade unionist, including serving on the TUC LGBT committee.

The meeting will highlight concerns over the government’s proposed updates for the Gender Recognition Act, which include allowing anyone to self identify their legal sex, lowering the age of consent for gender reassignment surgery from 18 to 16 years, making ‘misgendering’ a hate crime and conflating the legal definition of sex and gender.

This is the fifth of the We Need To Talk discussion events and is exactly 6 months since the first meeting at Speakers Corner, where a 60 year woman was assaulted by trans activists who were trying to shut down the meeting.

To ensure the safety of attendees there will be private security and police presence.
